Artist statement

I research an alternative way to ‘sound out’ contemporary ecological crises.
The main direction in creativity is focused on the study of the problems of the ecology of sound, its sociological impact, I propose possible solutions for the consequences and propose an imaginary future through the language of art.

Art project

Inversion (The Sound of Isolation)

In the art work made with 1 iPhone photo, 13 Instagram masks, and my track, I without leaving the house, of course, reflected my coexistence in quarantine with my neighbors.

During this difficult period of isolation, I was left alone with my neighbors in a new building. Every day they drill into all the walls and it seems already into my head.

My hearing transforms.

I took my violin, Octatrack, Korg, Kaoss Pad — and we played together like an industrial orchestra. Through this experiment, you heard this noise of repair in a new way.

Now, this is the music.

EXHIBITING

This art project Inversion (The Sound of Isolation) can be presented in a few formats to choose from:

1) Photo and sound (headphones or 2 bass speakers).

2) Video on phone, TV panel (to be used vertically), or projection on a wall and sound (headphones or 2 bass speakers).

3) Live art format or live performance with synthesizers live music and with my violin, with strobe light show and a digital artist with drills and drilling structures with different sound and lights effects on a stage.

Sound for Media Installation

Percept
The installation “Percept” aims to reveal the deep relationship between living nature and modern man. Technological development has allowed us to subdue the world around us. But it is difficult to deny the depth of the reverse impact that nature has on us. Combining technology and wildlife, the artists offer viewers to explore the sense and psycho-emotional perception of natural images in a new artificial environment. “Percept” combines art, technology and natural phenomena, creating an unusual sensory experience.

Orfeo Glitch
This is a teaser of a theatre performance at the Opera Festival (a detailed description of which you will find below). The performance involved actors, dancers and a choir led by me. I acted as a composer for this theatre performance. This teaser is also like a separate art work. I also wrote the music for it on purpose.

Tundra Vodka
What happens to the audience under the influence of our installation.

The project in collaboration with the Tundra vodka brand was conceived as an interactive photo zone at a music festival in the ArtPlay space (St. Petersburg).

The photo platform we created changed textures, color and sound when a person stepped on streams of its light. We, like the Tundra brand, pursued the goal of many photos against the background of the brand.

But everything went differently.

People occupied the entire installation with themselves and their interpretations. Rarely did anyone stop for a photo against the background of the installation, more often the guests tried to express themselves in motion. Then, drinks were brought (and of course cocktails with Tundra vodka), crowded on the cool floor in the projection illuminated from the darkness of the huge hall of the plant, someone guessed to drag bean-bag chairs from the neighboring halls of the festival. The guests of the festival found in our installation a corner of solitude and unity, they transformed the photo zone into a lounge zone, a zone of art and creativity.

Whether it was under the influence of the movement of complex structures, floating sound or festival amusements, one can only guess. The main thing is that the interactive turned out to be so deep.

Mandala

Interactive audiovisual installation MediaLab was created in 2015 by Tonoptik collective, whose members: Alexander Inkov, Yury Gorbachevskiy and Yury Tolstoguzov - set the task of creation, by means of multimedia technologies, a new experimental environment for human interaction with the people around or with the environment in which he is located.

Installation represents a round interactive table for four participants, each of whom can use two controls. Due to the special sensors which are built in these controls and that measure distance to the nearest object, it is possible to interact by moving hands in the range from 4 to 30 centimeters above them in the vertical direction. Thus, participants can manage some kind of virtual sliders that affect an interactive model of the installation which, due to algorithms used, not only has a unique visual, but also three-dimensional sound modulation that is implemented by means of a multichannel sound system. At the same time, each of the participant has a such model which only he can influence, thus, performing a certain part in the general action. As a result, anyone can take an active part in the creation of collective work, which is an audiovisual composition.

One of the main goals of this work is to provide a tool for a new kind of communication between people, as well as a demonstration of how this communication takes place. Interaction with the installation is a kind of model for cooperation within our society, in which we can trace the social processes flowing. Suppose there is a certain set of tools that participants can use together. First, no one knows how it all works, so that the result of collective work looks like chaos, but after gaining some experience, over time, the participants begin to feel each other, to negotiate, in other words, a self-organization is occurring. Thus, the installation is a platform for experimentation and research culture of communication within our society. Using this you can see whether the participants tend to collective self-organization, how they are willing to work together, how creative they are. The installation takes the personality and character of each participant within the context of the overall interaction, changing under his influence, creating thereby a unique audiovisual picture.

Digital Opera

Orfeo Glitch
DIGITAL OPERA 2.0, The Hermitage Theatre, Saint Petersburg 2019
The first festival that unites the genre of Opera and contemporary digital art.
As a sound artist of the digital Opera "Orfeo Glitch" I conducted an experiment with the chamber space of the classical theater in the form of a deep amphitheater and the audience conducted an immersive surround sound effect through the chorus and contrasting composition of the music.
At the same time as a composer I also implemented an experiment with a mix of the genre of classical Opera of the Baroque era and modern minimal and techno genres (Claudio Monteverdi and Christoph Gluck together with Alva Noto and Samuel Kerridge) in the composition of the Opera for theatrical media productions.
It was an attempt to show the synergy of Opera compositions created several centuries apart, such as an Aria from the game Oblivion, passing into the Hymn of the Cherubim by Tchaikovsky.
According the missions of the competition to introduce the audience to the Opera genre, I wanted to show with my music mix what possible expressive means would be used by composers of ancient eras if they wrote their works nowadays.

Interactive audiovisual installation

THUNDER
My live set played with Ableton Push 1 using sound for media pattern "Thunder" by Mariya Moshchenskaya. The interactive audiovisual installation-laboratory Medi@lab is presented within the framework of the Artification program at Gamma Festival 2018.

The creator of the installation is a media engineer Yury Tolstoguzov (Tonoptik). And I wrote the sound patterns for 4 projects of Medi@lab. It's a complex work with sound - the installation uses a quad system and 8 (eight) controllable sensor channels with various changes in the properties of sound and video.

From 1 to 8 people can affect sensors and thus change the video and create their experimental musical composition. I connecting TouchDesigner, which processes data from 8 IR sensors, with Ableton for interactive sound exposure.

The control occurs not only by changing the sound itself but also by changing sound in space.

At finissage of the exhibition, I present my live set played with Ableton Push 1 using sound for this media project.

Sound for exhibition

Urban Sound Hygiene
Sound for exhibition, which evoked a mixture of irony and disgust. The connection between the rituals of consumption and purification is transferred to various States of existence: from freedom in nature to satiety with society. In sound, I continued this idea with the theme "sound Hygiene in the space of an urban environment".
BACKGROUND
• 2002 - 2007 Kuban State University, Faculty of Editing and Publishing
• 1998 - 2002 Music orchestra playing
• 1996 - 2002 Course of journalism, Sochi Radio
• 1994 - 2002 Music school, violin class, Sochi
I'm a musician with an academic education (violin class), participated in a grand orchestra as a second violin, and in many music projects. Constantly I get acquainted with the world of musical cultures and expand genre perception. Raised in African-American music, in my live music performances I combine acoustic and synthesized sound with ethnic and noise stuffing.

Also, I teach people of all ages playing the piano, violin or other instruments the songs, they always dream to play! Radiohead, Air, Aphex Twin or Vivaldi, and Debussy, for example. To do this, especially for them, I will write notes and tell them how to read them. Or I can clear up some secret of music theory to help them to compose their own music on piano or Ableton.
I've established an individual learning curve to understand the structure of music for people interested in this art.
